STAINED GLASS

Revived in Troyes and the south of the Champagne region at the end of the C15th, this art form started with traditional techniques, and finished with the creation of windows where the glass was painted in " grisaille "

The Aube department has the French record for the amount of stained glass it has preserved, with 9,000 sq. metres dating from the C13th to the C19th. Troyes is known as the " Jerusalem of stained glass " because its churches house many fine examples. The Cathedral alone has 1,500 sq. metres. The last important stained glass artist in Troyes was Linard Gontier, " the Master of Light " : he created the " Mystic Wine-Press " for the Cathedral, in 1626.
